Systematic Chaos

Systematic Chaos

Dream Theater has built a career on delivering some of the most consistently strong progressive rock albums in history and Systemic Chaos proves no exception. Built upon the trademark musically diverse but stylistically reliable principles that made albums such as Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought instant classics, this album features new career highs such as "Prophets of War," "Forsake," and "Constant Motion." Although the band has flirted with commercially viable material in the past, especially on 2005's solid and exciting Octavarium, Systemic Chaos proves unrelenting in its pursuit of pure heavy rock. There are plenty of surprises in store, even for stalwart fans, perhaps one of the reasons that Dream Theater remains in a class by itself, ahead of the pack and ahead of the times. A truly outstanding album by any measure.--Jedd Beaudoin

Summary: A little overboard
Comment: It wasn't until I saw Dream Theater in concert that I started to really enjoy this album. It was not as impressive as their other albums and it was a little off the wall as far as lyics, but... hey, if your as big a fan of DT as I am than its worth owning.

Summary: Gets better and better each time I listen
Comment: The nuiansces in this release are compelling enough to not catch everything in a couple listening sessions. My favorites on this piece are the last 2 tracks, but In the Presence of Enemies Part 2 almost requires IPE part 1 (especially since they like to play these together in concert). This album gets as heavy as their Train and Awake albums, but theatrical and thematic like Six Degrees and Scenes from a Memory. This album is great snapshot of their capabilities.

I want to giver 4.5 - 5 stars but there are some vocal snippets that just didnt sound right. Given that, the work is masterfully done and encompasses rich textures, deep lyrics, great musical theme development, wild contrasts, and superb muscianship!

Summary: "Killer Stuff"
Comment: I did go through the reviews, but as for me being an ardent DT fan, this album is a 'killer 2' album after 'Train of thought' killer 1 album...very dark...I love the song called 'Ministry of lost souls', which is so rich in percussive progressive guitar chops. The voice mix of Corey and Mikael is simply stunning on the track 'Repentance'. I believe DT still strongly live up and survive to their progressive ethics.

Summary: Excellent!
Comment: Excellent album. Outstanding production and excellent songwriting and music performance. This is my favourite Dream Theater album beside Scenes From a Memory.

Summary: Dream Theater's best yet!
Comment: I am a huge DT fan. In fact, since I discovered them 3 years ago they're pretty much all I listen to. In my opinion, their albums are getting progressively better. I don't actually dislike any of their albums, but I much prefer the newer ones. Train of Thought was very heavy, very good. Octavarium had a broad range of rockin' songs. And now, I think Systematic Chaos is my favorite so far. I have a hard time describing the details of the music and why I like it so much. But to anyone that is a Dream Theater fan, or a fan of metal or prog rock, this is a must have!
