Customer Rating: Summary: Can't get enough of this CD Comment: As a lover of music I have been enthralled by this CD. It's one that I listen to almost daily. I am not learned enough musically to provide a concise analysis of this music except to say that it is at times unexpected and haunting and never dull. The trio seems to move together with a rare suppleness and the percussion especially keeps the pace and feeling fresh.
If you like jazz trio music and are looking for something original, here it is.
Customer Rating: Summary: he got skills Comment: from glasper's own shout out to hip-hop, i was expecting to hear hip-hop inspired jazz and maybe some smooth jazz blended in the mix, so i was reluctant to pick this one up. i was surprised to hear a piano trio grounded in traditional jazz. of the 11 selections 8 of them are written by glasper, with beatrice written by sam rivers who appeared on jason moran's black stars; and a medley of herbie hancock's maiden voyage, which oddly i always hear in my head as a piano trio piece anyway whenever i listen to the original by hancock, and everything in its right place by greenwood greenwood o'brien selway yorke; and the third selection, j dillalude, by james yancy and robert glasper.
like jason moran glasper incorporates his voice mail on a couple selections. i mention jason moran because both pianists at times work similar territory, but with different results.
tribute is a praise number featuring part of the eulogy for his mother. other church inspired selections, y'outta praise him and it's intro, the intro containing pieces of hymns.
after hearing glasper's in my element, were i in the mood to hear live jazz and glasper in this trio setting was at a nearby club, i would not hesitate one moment to catch his gig.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not really in MY element Comment: I see outside of Mr. Non-Review, who hadn't actually heard the record, everyone here gives this disc at least four stars. Well, let me be the first to rain just a bit on this parade. Glasper didn't live up to his hip-hoppish, new-thing hype for me at all. Surprisingly mainstream and old-school, and never really catching fire, while listening to him I find myself thinking of Bill Evans, which I'd suggest is not good for a 21st century, under-30 pianist. Based on this and Canvas, I'd say Glasper, like so many jazz musicians, may have a studio problem. Compare the four-cut Live at Bonnaroo EP on iTunes, which despite less than stellar recording conditions, really cooks.
Customer Rating: Summary: Holy Shiate!! Comment: I will not go on any further then to say Robert Glasper is truly the future of jazz. One foot firmly entrenched in classic jazz and the other completely versed in the contemporary catalog. Working with the gifted Vicente Archer and the sublime Damion Reid, I can't even begin to express how this album moved me. Fluid, smart, lurid, and so beautifully recorded, it's the first thing to move me since the chaotic solos of the Coltranesque Page Hamilton and before that the melodic yet brooding Dexter Gordon. His previous recordings, CANVAS, and MOOD, show his inevitable yet amazing journey. I would and will buy anything Glasper puts out.
