The Journey of a Social Constructionist: An Interview with John Shotter

We follow the interests and career of John Shotter as we accompany him through stories of his developmental years. Starting out as an engineer and with a strong interest in mathematics we learn from him how he evolved to his current interests and work on language, relationships and meaning.

The influences of Vygotsky, Vico, Bakhtin and Wittgenstein are clearly described. The passion that he feels in working for the rights of downtrodden or neglected populations becomes evident through this very warm conversation about his life and work.

John Shotter is a professor of interpersonal relations in the Department of Communication, University of New Hampshire. His long term interest is in the social conditions conducive to people having a voice in the development of participatory democracies and civil societies. He is a leading contributor to the literature on Social Constructionism.
