Summary: Strange As Angels
Comment: bell hooks' first published book of poetry is a strong one. "When Angels Speak of Love" features 50 poems that discuss love. True to form, the author spins poignant, delicate words into a read that warms the heart and touches the spirit. The poems vary in subject matter from the happiness of being in love, the fear of losing the one you love, and each emotion between the two extremes.

The first poem in the book describes the giddiness of love and the pleading for it to never stop. Through the rest of the book Ms. hooks pulls the reader along a journey laced with memories of love, both sweet and sour. Although each poem is delicate and few are more than 15 lines, when woven together these pieces make "When Angels Speak of Love" a powerful testament.

I found it refreshing that all of the poems were not about "romantic" love. Fans of Ms. hooks will recognize the occasional reference to her childhood or young adulthood. This is especially true in a poem 25, which mentions her missing a cowboy hat and a pair of boots. This quote was a buried treasure for readers that remember this childhood memory from her autobiography "Wounds of Passion: A Writing Life".

The poems in this collection do not have names; they are numbered from one to fifty. I liked this approach because it flowed well with the disarming style of the book. The familiar feeling of this book from the first page is a testament of Ms. hooks' talent and ability to caress language. I recommend this book to fans of poetry, and especially to anyone who has had the pleasure of reading one of her previous works.
Although this collection of poems is a departure from some of her more critical and feminist writings, it is a refreshing and welcomed departure.
