EAT ME DRINK ME - MARILYN MANSON
Between an unshakeable screw-you personality, his eternal irritation of wholesome types everywhere and simply the fact that he’s still determined and uncompromising more than a decade into an uneven career, there is something very likable about Marilyn Manson. It’s easy to root for him, and he makes it even easier on this cinematic soundtrack for dark-alley crimes, punching your boss in the mouth or chain-gang shifts in Hades. Lyrically, there are a handful of lines for his legions to latch on to, maybe none better than “You and me and the devil makes three.” Musically, the album is adventurous and rarely lazy — there are vague traces of Metallica, U2 and even reggae. But there are only a couple of songs (”If I Was Your Vampire,” “The Red Carpet Grave,” “You and Me and the Devil”) with enough impact to avoid boring people who catch the band on tour this summer.
