WANNA GO BACK - EDDIE MONEY
Within the carefully crafted fare of his 30 years of recording, there’s always been a bar band kind of sensibility to Eddie Money’s music. “Wanna Go Back,” an all-covers set, returns him to those roots — and even features a black-and-white photo of a 15-year-old Money (then Mahoney) and his teen band, the Grapes of Wrath, in the CD booklet. Money’s weathered voice sounds comfortable working its way through such favorites as “Higher and Higher,” “Good Lovin’,” “Jenny Take a Ride” and “Build Me Up Buttercup,” and he closes the set with a timely tribute to James Brown on the medley “Please Please Please” and “Oh Baby Don’t You Weep.” None of these 12 performances supersedes the originals, but as a veteran whose path to the charts these days is hardly right on the money, this is an appropriate gambit to throw into the mix.
