LIVE AT MASSEY HALL - NEIL YOUNG
This solo acoustic set from January 1971 is the second in a series of long-promised archival releases. While last fall’s “Live at the Fillmore” encapsulated the ragged, jammy glory of Young and Crazy Horse, this collection showcases a singer/songwriter at his creative peak. More than half the material here was unreleased at the time of the performance — including six songs from his then-forthcoming album, “Harvest” — and it listens like a “best of” collection that never saw the light of day. One can only imagine how proud his Canadian countrymen must have felt as Young unveiled soon-to-be classic rock staples like “Old Man,” “The Needle and the Damage Done” and “Heart of Gold,” alongside already popular tunes such as “Helpless,” “Ohio” and “Down by the River.” Billboard
