Kenny Rogers, Etta James to headline country music festival
June is welcomed this year with the addition of the opportunity to celebrate American music at the Country Music Fest and Tribute to Blues. All events will be held at Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.
The Delaware Celebration of Jazz, Inc has announced the first Country Music Fest Saturday, June 3, to complement the Blues Fest Weekend scheduled the following weekend. On Saturday, June 3, the music icon Kenny Rogers takes the stage.
For more than five decades, Rogers has delivered memorable songs, drawing fans among rock, pop, soul and country audiences. It took several tries before Kenny Rogers became a star. As a member of the First Edition (and the New Christy Minstrels before that), he shared in some million-sellers, among them “Reuben James†and (“Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Townâ€.) Superstardom arrived in the 1970s and he has been in the public eye ever since.
His awards are prolific and include three Grammys, 11 People’s Choice Awards, 18 American Music Awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards and five Country Music Association Awards.
His current single release, “I Can’t Unlove You†is in the top 20 CMT Countdown, The song is from his new album “Water & Bridges.†The disc, Rogers’ first studio album in three years, will arrive in stores this week. This weekend he will be featured on “CBS Sunday Morning.†and will wrap up his TV rounds Friday, April 7 with an appearance on the “CBS Early Show.â€
This show will contribute a portion of the profits to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. This charity has been embraced by Rogers and The Rehoboth Country and Blues Fest is assisting in this effort.
The second annual Tribute to Blues, a followup to last year’s BB King show, is set for Friday and Saturday, June 9-10
The Louisiana Keyboard Commotion featuring Buckwheat Zydeco and Marcia Ball will perform on Friday, June 9.
Buckwheat Zydeco’s latest album, “Jackpot!,†combines soulful original tunes, inspired singing and playing and the trademark exuberance that’s made him the world’s foremost and best loved zydeco artist. According to the New York Times, “Buckwheat Zydeco leads one on the best party bands in America. With four Grammy nominations, collaborations with Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam and Keith Richards, and performances with the Boston Pops and at the closing ceremonies of the Atlanta Summer Olympics., Buckwheat Zydeco has taken the good-time music of Southwest Louisiana’s culture to new heights.
Over the course of her three-decade career, Marcia Ball has developed a large and enthusiastic fan base with her blend of sounds from the Texas-Louisiana border with New Orleans R&B and piano-boogie A three-time Grammy nominee, Marcia Ball has recently released her 12th CD, “Live Down the Road!†It was just named the No. 1 Blues CD of 2005 by Living Blues Magazine. She is also tied for most nominated artist overall in 2005’s Blues Music Awards with four nominations including Entertainer of the Year, Contemporary Blues Album of the Year, Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, and Piano Player of the Year
She has drawn raves from national print media, including Rolling Stone and USA Today, and was called “a formidable musical force†by Billboard magazine. Her PBS special, “In Performance At the White House,†along with BB King and her performance in “Piano Bluesâ€, a film directed by Clint Eastwood as part of Martin Scorcese’s “The Blues†series, has made her a national woman of note.
A contribution from this concert, after expenses, will be sent to the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund, a 501 C3 Corporation on behalf of the Louisiana Commotion and Rehoboth Beach.
On Saturday, June 10, Etta James and the Roots Band will perform. Two years shy of her 70th birthday, blues singer Etta James looks better than ever. After struggling with a weight problem most of her life, James underwent gastric bypass surgery and dropped nearly 200 pounds.
To put it mildly, James is ecstatic about her new lease on life. In fact, she cannot wait to begin touring in support of her March 14 release “All the Way†(RCA Victor) and strutting all her new stuff.
On “All The Way,†the multiple Grammy Award winner and 1993 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee revisits songs made famous by others, including Marvin Gaye (“What’s Going Onâ€), Simply Red (“Holding Back the Yearsâ€), Prince (“Purple Rainâ€) and Johnny “Guitar†Watson (“Strung Outâ€).
Historically, James has hung in there from the age of R&B and doo-wop in the mid-1950s through soul’s late-1960s heyday and right up into the 1990s and 2000s (where her 1994 disc “Mystery Lady†paid loving jazz-based tribute to one of her idols, Billie Holiday. James’ voice has deepened over the years, coarsened more than a little, but still conveys remarkable passion and pain. In concert, James is a sassy, no-holds-barred performer with suggestive stage antics.
The concert will also raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and The Beebe Medical Center Diabetes Outreach Program.
In selecting both weekends of music, the Delaware Celebration of Jazz, Inc. promises to give support in this new effort to bring quality events to Rehoboth Beach.
