A lot has happened to Barfield since his impressive 2003 debut. His label closed, postponing the release of his sophomore set, and his sister was seriously injured in a car accident that killed a family friend. All that pain and confusion, and the questions that accompanied it, have found their way onto this amazing new disc. “Closer†is a potent ballad about searching for answers and finding a renewed faith in God, while “Unleashed†is a confessional look at believing one’s own hype and then regaining proper perspective. Producer Marshall Altman captures Barfield’s soulful vocals so that the listener feels like he or she is in the same room. It may have been a long time in the making, but this project was worth the wait. It is good to see this gifted young artist back on track. –Billboard
